Trinity then west

9/17 Saturday – This was one of our goals, and we got to Twillingate this afternoon. Check out this place with Google images. Beautiful. It does not seem as nice as it was back 8-9 years ago.

For this campground, we are paying the most we’ve paid in Canada. So, one night and we are out of here.

We saw Dan today – guy from Washington that we’ve seen for the last month, met up on the Trans Labrador Highway.  It is just him and his 14 year old bulldog, in a van conversion. I think he boondocks almost every night.

We made reservations on the last ferry leaving St John’s for the year, going to Nova Scotia – next Saturday. It is an approx 18 hour crossing but it’s either that or drive all the way back duplicating more than half of what we’ve seen already in Newfoundland. Also, probably 3 tanks of gas and 3 extra days to get back for the 6 hour ferry. We also booked a room with beds/births and booked space for Adam in their kennel.

Now we have to get there – which is only a couple hundred miles but we will head that way slowly starting tomorrow.

9/18 – We creeped along the east coast today. We saw some amazing little fishing villages – they are breath taking. If we ever moved it would be here (not considering that). But, I could live on and in the water here. Good fishing, clear water, and Newfies for neighbor’s. On that account, neighbor’s, we could never do much better than what we already have.

Again, we ran into Dan. He was looking for a boondocking site.

So, today we were trying to find a place to stay, going from town to town, and this guy stops us in the middle of the street and first offers us fresh jack mackerel he caught on his boat. I’ve had mackerel before. Politely declined. And he kept talk and asking us questions. Meanwhile cars behind us can’t get around us when other cars are coming at us, but he doesn’t care, so, neither did I. Finally he gives us this long set of instructions to get to this campground, which, to our understanding, was already closed. He thought it was still open.  If we found it closed he said to proceed on into Greenspond where we could boondock in this big parking lot. First, the campground was open, right on a lake. We would never have found it without his instructions. Second, after unhooking the trailer, we drove on into Greenspond. For me, it was the most picturesque place we’ve seen. So, thank you Ken Roebotham, Brookfield, NL.  We will write him when we get home. People in NL are great.

Good pics today but lousy weather, fog and lots of rain – but warm.  It hasn’t stopped raining for the last 6 hours. When Adam has to go, we push the awning button and that keeps us dry outside.

National Park territory tomorrow – Terra Nova. Then, probably on to St John’s around Wednesday for 2-3 nights.

We leave at 5pm Saturday on the ferry and arrive in Nova Scotia around mid morning. This being the last ferry for the year, if something bad happens where we don’t go, then 3 full days of travel back to the SW coast for the short ferry and it goes twice everyday of the year.

9/19 – We are now in Trinity, which seems like a very upscale village – reminds me of Mendocino. Lucked out with this really small campground that we were able to barely fit into. Took two sites but the park only had one other rig – a small motorhome with a French couple.

The weather has dropped a good 20 degrees today, and it’s still raining at times. Winter is coming and we are a going.

I’m going to send this now, you will get the next update probably Wednesday/Thursday once we are settled in to St John’s.

9/23 – Going West

We leave tomorrow, Saturday morning, from St John’s to Argentia, about 60 miles from here, and take the ferry at 5pm.

We saw most of what we wanted to here but you could spend a month and not see

it all.

There has been a recently completed NATO North Atlantic naval exercise and the small harbor here was filling up with warships from the US, England, Canada, with about a dozen more coming. That was pretty impressive.

Not much else for now. Nova Scotia and PEI (Prince Edward Island) next.
