Big Bend National Park

May 1 – 4th – Spent 3 nights at Big Bend.

We arrived at 3 pm it was 99 degrees. Two hours later it was 106!  We saw it all over the next 2 days. Javelinas are a type of Peccary – wild pig. On one walk with Everest I saw 15 crossing the road right in front of us. We also saw a Caracara – a colorful predatory bird smaller than an eagle. Santa Elena canyon where the rio grande river cuts through the mountain is the most picturesque place in the park (pic).  A beaver pond adjacent to the Rio Grande has Mexican beavers that live in and on shore I also saw several nutria there.

On Cinco de Mayo we were in a state park north of Del Rio, TX.

Nothing exciting about that except the over the air TV. All 8 channels were Spanish speaking. There was one movie in English but commercials were in Spanish. What? We are not in Mexico!

Beautiful wild flowers and virtually no traffic. We spent the next night in a state park near Junction.  The first site they assigned to us didn’t work – huge fire ant nest. That is common in the south and they will move in with you if you don’t use borax.  Austin next.
