5/12/19 – Left Austin today and made our way south to Port Aransas, it’s near Corpus Christi. The RV park is right on the beach. This is, or was, one of the more popular vacation spots for Texans. Almost 2 years ago hurricane Harvey arrived here as a Cat IV and destroyed much of it. But they are a rebuilding and bringing it back to what it was. We recognized several places from our last trip before the hurricane. To get here you need to hop a ferry for a short jaunt trip across the bay. It’s free.
Food, you may note, we always mention because, well, IT’S IMPORTANT! Here it was, one of my favorite Southern dishes – red beans and rice!
A National Wildlife refuge near here is the wintering grounds for whooping cranes, and other waterfowl. When I was a kid the birds were down to only 15 total number and were expected to become extinct. Last year’s census at the refuge was 505 with numerous juveniles, all of these from those 15 birds back 60 years ago.
Above photo caption: Right across from our camp site. With a beach pass, $12 for a year, you can tent and RV camp anywhere outside this barrier. You can drive basically forever on the beach. We preferred the electricity (AC) as it’s not only quite warm it’s really humid.
