Glenallen to Valdez

8/27 – We left Anchorage this morning and drove about 200 miles to Glennallen. This (pic) was about the only interesting part – a cow moose, and her two calves that had to be a couple years old. Very healthy looking animals. Tomorrow we will go due south from here to Valdez, 120 miles or so. After a couple days there we will head back, no other way out.

Valdez is really interesting.

Surrounded by huge mountains on a straight connected to the Gulf of Alaska. Fish and oil are responsible for its prosperity. The Alaska pipeline terminus is across the bay with two big facilities. There as many boat here as in Homer – thousand or more. Halibut and salmon are the commercially import fish. There is a big run of salmon currently and all the streams are full of spawning fish.

The largest national park in the US. It is 5 times bigger than Yellowstone, some 13 million acres. The road to Valdez goes along its border. This is all historical Copper River country.

Cleaning Fish – Mostly Silver Salmon

Fishing on the dock

I have never seen a public ocean pier where it was the least bit productive. This one couple took home 6 Salmon, 3 Chum and 3 Silvers. Everyone caught some.
