8/9/19 – Happy Birthday Shayley!
So, we left Deep Creek this morning and headed south to “The end of the Road” for those who can remember Tom Bodett’s nationwide radio program from Homer – now he’s famous for Motel 6 -“We’ll leave the light on for you.”
It’s literally breathtaking as you come over the hills to the west and drop into Homer. Photo caption: Dropping in to Homer. The Spit, centered, is about 5 miles long.
All the mountains to the east, across Kachemak bay are snow covered with several glaciers (pic). Homer is considered the Halibut Capital of the World and known for the narrow spit that juts out about 5 miles from town and has hundreds of RV sites (maybe even thousands), restaurants, gift shops, and, now this I’m sure of, thousands of boats. There is a smoke store called Spit Tobacco, which, when I saw it, made me wonder why they’d have store dedicated to chew, then I remembered where it was.
“The Hole” is an interesting place on the spit. My friend Joel told me about this when he came here. It’s 200-300 yards long, about 50 yards wide, made of gravel, with an outlet/inlet to the bay. (pic). Alaska Fish and Game dump young fish (smolts) here and they all head out of the hole and into the ocean. After 2-4 years they return to spawn here. People line the banks and fish for them (pic). How successful are they?,I have no idea but it’s a popular spot (pic 2). I’m sure the Hole was expensive to build. So guess who’s paying for it. – Exxon – from the accident with the Valdez. Go to YouTube if interested in the hole.
8/10 – For the past couple days, we have had dinner at The Lighthouse Grill. They also serve BBQ from their smokehouse next to the restaurant. It makes the place smell good. Really really good food. We spent today doing NOTHING. I think we both needed a rest. Everest went to the dog park 4-5 times but still a pretty lazy day for him too.
8/13 – Today we will start our trek back to familiar territory and head for home, kinda. We will make a side trip to Valdez, and probably go to Hyder, then down to the Glacier, Banff, Jasper, Waterton areas – and then, who knows?
Have to look closely to see its developing antlers.
As a point of interest, the two suspects in the 3 murders back in BC have died as their bodies were found in Northern Manitoba – appears to be suicide.
Daylight hours are now diminishing. At one time we were getting more than 20 hours of sun daily. Now it’s down to 16 hours, and it actually gets dark!
