The above pictures was taken 8/24 (picture of flowers called Fireweed ) and is not rare but extremely common. They line certain areas for miles. Moose eat these flowers but we cannot prove it. There are moose on Newfoundland that were introduced in the early ,1900s. In fact, it is the highest concentration of them anywhere in the world. Pay attention, there will be a test when we get back.
8/24 Wednesday
Not much to tell today.
We did about 175 miles today in north central Quebec. We waved at everyone – cars coming at us, guys on their front porch, road workers, etc. The only person to wave back was an old Cree woman in front of her house. Plus, these drivers are, far and away, the most aggressive we’ve ever encountered (outside of taxi drivers in Rio). I’ll be glad to see Quebec in all 3 of my rear view mirrors.
Nothing special about tonight’s campground, nobody speak English, and I was a certain source of entertainment setting up the RV. The town did have a McDonalds that also pumped gas!
Now it will be straight down to the St Lawrence Seaway (looks like it will be almost three hundred miles) then east to Baie Comeau.
8/25 Thursday
We did about 200 miles and “dove” off the road when we finally saw a camping sign, called Belley – Camping and Plage (means beach). They have a really nice beach, on Lake St. Jean, and we think maybe they have a nude beach, which we will check out after dinner.
It pays to check out things first as this place was a tad over $50!!!, but, ya know, if they have a nude beach…… On second thought, if this old, fat guy next to us takes his clothes off, we are outta here.
Susan is fixing spaghetti for dinner so I checked out their little store for maybe a baguette, after all these are all French here. No luck so I bought a 6 pack of Coors – $16!, oh right, it is imported.
There is a Costco about 30 miles from here so we will stock up on stuff there (probably some more beer),but probably won’t make Baie Comeau until Sunday.
8/26- Friday
Went to Costco after getting lost in the town, but got help, found it, got pretty much everything we will need for the next 10 days or so, and travelled down the road to a campground overlooking the St Lawerence Seaway. We will leave in the morning for Bay Comeau – finally!, it’s 120 miles away.
The trailer has a refrigerator which is good sized and works all the time, even when driving – operates well on both electric and gas. It is full and we have an ice chest as well.
Actually, re. title here, we are now starting week 4!
Oh, I know you all are wondering about the nude beach – nope, darn.
8/27 Saturday
Baie Comeau – finally, but we have a problem.
One of the trailer tires has a slow leak. It was half flat this morning so the guy at the park took us to the air station and pumped it up. It actually only lost about 5 lbs pressure in the 120 miles to get here, but it has to be fixed or replaced. We went to this huge Canada Tires place and they don’t have a jack that will lift the tire off the ground! Actually, I think they didn’t want to do it. Everything here is closed on Sunday, so we will spend a couple extra days here to fix it. We have two spares for the trailer. I carry two jacks as well.
Sunday 8/28
I’ll send this now and will probably not get another off to you as we will get this tire fixed tomorrow morning and then leave from there. Today is laundry, reorganizing everything, and some minor shopping.
So, next email will be sometime in a week or so.
I’ll try to get a few pics sent today.
Camp Belley on Lake St Jean
This lake is huge and popular. I couldn’t see the other side this morning and it is clear. I think they draw from Quebec City and its mostly a young crowd but a ton of older permanent people live here. They have over 300 campsites and it’s mostly tent campers.
