Voyageur National Park

6/26/19 – In northern Minnesota, bordering with Canada, is this huge national park, 40% of which is water. There are 5 large lakes dotted with islands, and all connected. Rainy Lake is the largest at 1 million acres. It has a lot of islands which afford remote camping only accessible by boat. The parks larger wildlife include white tailed deer, moose, black bear, and wolf. And, there is outstanding fishing here, both cold and warm water species. Everyone has boats, obviously.

It’s interesting that our last visit to a national park also bordered another country – Mexico, Big Bend. Their similarity ends there. We saw 106 degrees down south. Voyageur has seen -60 F, or a town bordering the park did. Unlike Big Bend which was so desperately dry, here it’s wet, water often on both sides of the road. Yesterday we got our mosquito (Minnesota’s state bird) gear, Musko spray and head nets.

Yesterday we left International Falls, MN, crossed over the Rainy River, and entered Canada – western Ontario, Fort Frances, and drove to Kenora.

Kenora, which I’ve never heard of, has a huge lake too, called Lake of the Woods. We will continue today into Manitoba. We have plans for some extreme diversions, going a long way north before getting back on track well to the west. Stay tuned.

In the entire Voyageur NP there is not one inch of road. Plane and boat are the only solution.
