6/12/19 – We have finally left the South, currently in the UP (Upper Peninsula of Michigan). In the past week we have been making miles! – thru parts of Tennessee, WV, Georgia, and finally Ohio where we met up with a dear friend (George/ieChess) and her beau, just south of Cleveland. Then, it was the Ohio Turnpike into Indiana for one night, then north into Michigan.
Breakout the warm clothes that we put away early in the trip. Last night it dropped into the low 40s, coolest weather we’ve seen since leaving home.
When you come off the spectacular Mackinac Bridge, which connect lower Michigan to the UP, you have Lake Huron to the right and Lake Michigan to the left. It is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, and total length is over 5 miles.
We spent the night on the shores of Lake Michigan, and it rained all day and night. The small private campground was one of the better ones with great WIFI. Almost every place we’ve been advertises internet but most WIFI signals are weak beyond usability.
6/13 – We drove to the north today and are camping on the shores of Lake Superior, which, if you remember from your geography, is the largest of the Great Lakes. Sunset last night from our site will be included here. Speaking of which, really long days right now. Sunrise is before 6am and sunset is almost at 10pm. It’s going to be even longer as we head into Canada and on towards Alaska.
We will spend 2 nights here and next head for Duluth which is probably 2 days of driving or more.
I contend that the Great Lakes are not connected to the Atlantic, but all internet sources says they are via the St Lawrence Seaway. Well, Lake Superior here is 600ft above sea level. There are canals and rivers that connect lakes to each other but there is no direct link otherwise this lake would drain out to the Atlantic. It’s like saying Lake Shasta is connected to the Pacific, but only after a couple hundred miles of the Sacramento River. And that’s all I got to say about that.
Tired and Wet
First bath since he left Denver. Why is he tired, I did all the work.
