4/27/19 – From the Rio Grande Gorge we went south thru the most beautiful mountainous area of NM on a road with virtually no traffic. End up in Tucumcari, in the plains. Their downtown businesses represent the heart and soul of Route 66. Then yesterday we continued on south to Hobbs where we are set up at the McAdams City park. Nice, lots of grass, big spaces, and $18. We almost stayed at this state park 100 miles north of here. Glad we didn’t. It got hit with a severe thunderstorm with damaging hail last night.
Wild Animals so far: lots of pronghorn antelope even this far south in NM, Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, mule deer, elk (it was playing possum on side of road), road runner chasing some bug, tons of waterfowl, and lots of common birds. Here there are Grackle – a big black bird with a huge oar shaped tail.
Wind Turbine Farms. Quite common in the planes. Newer turbines are larger and taller than others we’ve seen, and the blades have slight curvatures – obviously they generate more electricity than the older styles. Just guessing – heights appear to be about 400 ft. The older models are over 325’. I won’t bore you with specifics but their is a lot of science involved with the construction and operation of turbine farms (look it up).
