4/23/19 – Left Lathrop, CO, yesterday and drove to Taos NM, then south about 15 miles to Pilar where we are camping on the Rio Grande river at a BLM site. This is a big river rafting and popular fishing area. Here we pay half the normal camping fee of $15 with our Golden Age Passport. So it was $7.50 here and $44 a night at Lathrop SP. We are deep in this canyon and protected from the wind but not the rain – that finally stopped around daybreak. Lots of game with mule deer and mountain sheep. This area is a protected national monument and referred to as the Rio Grande Gorge. There are 5 campgrounds and 9 developed hiking trails along the 7 mile stretch of the river. FYI – there is some hideous cactus on these trails and Everest stays “home.” Lots of Ol’West history here. At times it feels like a foreign country, especially in Taos, which is one of the oldest towns in the US – narrow streets, adobe constructed buildings, and pot holes. At the campground there is no cell service, WIFI, or TV. The camp host is retired Navy and has been here in his RV for over 4 years – continuously.
